Colorless
I chose “Colorless” over black and white, because it allows for all the shades in between.
Color is beautiful, vibrant, and emotional. It can also be distracting, and hide the true beauty that’s underneath it. When you take away the color, you are left with the bare subject, and in some ways the raw beauty of things.
During a ski touring trip in Rogers Pass, we had the opportunity to travel across the Asulkan Glacier to Sapphire Col. As one of my partners began venturing off, I could see this incredible scene unfolding in front of me. So I waited patiently for them to enter the frame, the only tracks on an otherwise untouched wilderness.
This is a hidden gem right in the heart of town, alive with color and life in the summer, but eerily quiet and lifeless in winter. But if you are quiet, you can still hear the pulse of the area, with the odd raptor, northern flicker, and shore birds nearby. You can just feel it waiting, hibernating, ready for spring to wake it back up.
Sometimes you need to find creative ways to photograph common things. While exploring Victoria I took at least a dozen pictures of the capital, and they all just looked like a “picture of a building”. Then as I was walking back to my hotel, I headed up some stairs and spotted this view out of the corner of my eye.
That’s what this buskers carboard sign said. He was flattered that I wanted to take his picture. But I was grateful he allowed me to capture his art, within mine.
This decommissioned court had battered and bent posts, net-less hoops, cracked and broken pavement. It had a post apocalyptic, deserted inner city vibe which I wanted to convey in an image.
Italy is an amazing place, and Florence was definitely a highlight. There is beauty in even the simplest things here. This scene struck me because although I was seeing it with my own eyes, it felt as though I was looking back in time.
There is a little church on the property of a local farm. I see it almost every day, but this one day I decided to drive down the service road that passes right beside it. And as I did, this hawk landed and scanned the neighboring field for prey. It had an eerie vibe, that I immediately knew needed to be Black to White.
