Street photography is an interesting genre. Sometimes it involves exactly that, images of roads, sidewalks, buildings, people out and about doing their thing. Sometimes when wandering the streets, you come across unique experiences, like an open air jazz show. You need to have an open mind, because you just never know what your subject is going to be. And it takes bravery, and willingness to engage strangers which more often than not I am learning is very rewarding. And not just because of the images.

On a late evening walk, I came across these bicycle locking installations. It was dark, grey and cold, and their color looked this way to my eye. The bright colors contrasting against the dreary dark street. The final images convey exactly what I was experiencing at the time.

Sometimes when you’re out shooting in the street you happen across an open air jazz performance with great light. And the universe gives you some unique images.

Victoria Streets

The following images were captured while on a trip to Vancouver Island. Victoria was extremely shut down due to the pandemic, and the streets were nearly empty. It made for a very surreal experience, in a location that is usually bustling with people and activity.

A photo-worthy photo-booth in Rome.

This brought back memories of taking photos in similar booths when I was a child.

Street photography in Florence was so much fun. The city is so beautiful, there is so much going on, and the people were so friendly. I could have stayed here indefinitely. And the cool vehicles, little cars and scooters everywhere!

“Conversations in Italian”

“Conversations in Italian”

I was initially drawn to the sun and shadow in this scene, but ultimately it was the visible intensity of the conversation between these two men that brought this image to life.

This was one of my very first street shots. Maybe I’m just nostalgic, but it’s still one of my favorites. This tiny little alley in Victoria BC’s “Chinatown District” is almost like something out of a Harry Potter book. It’s bursting with sights, sounds, smells and color, so much color!

“Beam”

I’m not sure whether this really qualifies as street or landscape photography. But I shot it on the fly as we were walking around Paris one evening and the spinning light was mesmerizing. I was standing on the street when I shot it, so in my book, that’s “Street Photography”.
